–Amir Khan (1970s)–

“The reflective temper of Amir Khan is well-matched to Bageshri’s expansive space. The rich, measured strokes of his vocal brush hold us captive to this séance. He picks up a traditional vilambit composition – Bahu guna ka mana – and tops it off with a tarana…” (Rajan Parrikar)

If you tune Bageshri like Kafi [i.e. in aroha order], then maybe you will not get the correct Gandhar…” (Shivkumar Sharma)

Raag Darbari

S-R-g-m-P-d-n-S

—Context—

Origins, myths, quirks, & more

Raag Darbari is among the most revered musical forms in the entire Hindustani tradition. Its name is derived from durbar, the Persian for ‘royal court’ – sitarist-scholar Deepak Raja speaks for many through the centuries in describing it as “the emperor of ragas, and the raga of emperors”.

Darbari’s majestic tones are said to have echoed across the marble floors of Mughal palaces, bringing solemn relief to kings, warlords, and diplomats under the refuge of late-night darkness. Some say the raga was created by Mian Tansen at Emperor Akbar’s 16th-century durbar, to soothe the ruler’s stress and provide some rare moments of pause amidst the constant trials of governing a vast, warring empire.

Consequently, performances tend to retain a slow, grave, and reverential character, balancing patient melodic turns with heavy, vocalistic ornaments. It is sometimes referred to as Darbari Kanada, indicating membership of the Kanada family, a varied group of Carnatic-derived ragas sharing similar phraseologies.

—Voodoo Child: Slight Return (USA)—
(Jimi Hendrix, 1969)

“Despite being released over 50 years ago now – a full 9 months before man had set foot on the moon – I’d still choose Voodoo Child as my one guitar record to send into space. I’ll never forget the day my dad first played it to me aged 11 – listening wide-eyed to the clashing textures and tone-colour explosions, arriving from unseen directions before fading away to some hidden realm of future six-string discovery. No other track gave me more motivation to pick up the guitar – and two decades on, it’s still my favourite single showcase of the electric’s best energies. Esteemed musicologist Hulk Hogan clearly agrees, having chosen it as his WWE walkout music…” (from my Eb ‘Hendrix’ page)
