- India: Known in South India’s Carnatic traditions as Ragam Simhendramadhyamam (melakarta scale #57) – hailed by critic Charulatha Mani for its “regal, meditative, bold, and striking” qualities. Similarly used in modern Hindustani music under the same name, first imported North by sitarist Ravi Shankar in the 1950s (Shankar also used it on his soundtrack for the 1966 cult classic film Chappaqua).
