S-R-G-D-N-S
An uncommon Kalyan variety, named Adbhut (‘Wondrous’) for omitting two of Kalyan’s most vital swaras (Ma & Pa). Remains popular in the Dagarvani Dhrupad, but few others have risen to the centreless challenges of losing both mid-saptak swaras. Aminuddin Dagar reportedly considered the raga to be an offshoot of Khem Kalyan, while Uday Bhawalkar links it to the congruent Carnatic Niroshta, a title meaning ‘Without the Lips’ – Ma and Pa being the only sargam syllables which require them (Niroshta’s origin myth involves the great composer Muthiah Bhagavatar hastily conjuring up a new raga for the King of Mysore after he was stung on the lips by a bee, even writing lyrics to suit his peculiar predicament: ‘Raja Raja Radhite’: also listen to Bhanupriya, another Carnatic ‘niroshta’ with swaras SRgdNS). Pelva Naik, who describes Adbhut Kalyan as “very special in the Dagar gharana“, kindly recommended me a pair of renditions by her guru Zia Fariduddin Dagar (a full-length take, and a scene from Mani Kaur’s 1983 Dhrupad film: also hear the same themes reprised by his disciple Nirmalya Dey three decades later at Darbar 2013). Compare to other scales which omit consecutive generic swaras including Devranjani, Meghranjani, and Malashree.
